in anatomy, the tarsus is a bone or group of bones in the hindfoot of vertebrates, above the toes and below the tibia and fibula in mammals and birds, comprising the calcaneus (heel bone) and the cuboid, navicular, and proximal and intermediate cuneiform bones, and in birds, the talus (all of which are sometimes collectively referred to as the ‘ankle joint’).
