rawinsonde Definition

A device that is released from the ground or another aircraft to measure meteorological conditions aloft, including pressure, temperature, and humidity as it ascends or descends through the atmosphere, and sends the data back to a receiver on the ground or the parent aircraft. It is named after Professor H. W. Raws, who invented the device.
