A pursuit or investigation, especially a thorough, often aggressive one, aimed at uncovering or eliminating perceived wrongdoing or wrongdoing agents within an organization or society. It can also refer to the activity of hunting moles (people who secretly work for a hostile foreign power), although this usage is more literal and less common.
