halfstaff Definition

A position of a flag, especially the flag of the United States, in which it is flown from the halyard exactly half way down the staff, usually to signify mourning or a period of time following a national tragedy. It is also used to honor the memory of deceased military personnel, especially on Memorial Day or during Veterans Day celebrations.
